Signs and Symptoms of Late Stages of HIV

HIV and Its Progression
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the term used to describe a retrovirus that infects cells of the immune system, destroying or impairing their function. HIV is known to be a progressive disease that debilitates the immune system and eventually results in the diagnosis of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). As HIV progresses to AIDS, it could cause the occurrence of at least 20 known related illnesses that result from the compromised health of the immune system.

Initial Stage Acute Retroviral Syndrome (ARS)
This is the period of rapid HIV replication in the body that occurs two to four weeks after contracting HIV. As HIV levels in the blood increase, it results in acute HIV infection which is characterized by a drop in CD4 cell counts. CD4, alternately called T-4 cells send signals to activate the disease combating immune response that wards off sickness. In a HIV infected person the CD4 count falls to under 200 making the sufferer vulnerable to a host of infections and cancers. Many individuals experience flu-like symptoms during this period of infection. These symptoms can include fever, inflamed lymph nodes, chills, sore throat, rash and muscular aches. These symptoms may last from a few days to 4 weeks and then go away. Those that experience these symptoms often liken their suffering to 'the worst possible flu' which is what medical experts call Acute Retroviral Syndrome (ARS). It is also called Primary HIV Infection.

Chronic HIV Infection
During this phase, unlike in the initial ARS stage, HIV reproduces at very low levels, although it is still active. The estimated sufferers of HIV who are unaware of being carriers of the deadly HIV virus are likely to be so in part due to the characteristics at this stage of the disease. A HIV-positive individual can have an undetectable viral load and a healthy CD4 cell count without the use of medication through earlier years of this phase.

Though this phase may last upto even 8 years, one may not have symptoms or opportunistic infections. Towards the middle and end of this stage, the onset of constitutional symptoms of the HIV virus affecting the entire body such as fatigue, weight loss, fevers, night sweats and muscular aches can be seen. Recurring outbreaks of cold sores, mouth sores, genital herpes and diarrhea can also be suspected symptoms of HIV.

In women, abnormal pap tests, persistent yeast infections and cervical cancer can also be symptoms of presence of HIV virus in the body.

Late Stage of Hiv
An HIV-infected person may not develop the late stage commonly referred to as AIDS until 8 to 10 years after being infected. Normal CD4 counts in a healthy individual range between 500 and 1,600 cells per cubic millimeter of blood. As HIV progresses to AIDS, CD4 count falls to under 200 cells. As AIDS occurs, a collection of opportunistic infections that are usually severe, such as pneumonia, tuberculosis or cancers are seen.

HIV virus has no known cure. But with early treatment and strict adherence to medication regimen, many individuals continue to live active lives for several healthy years.

HIV Cure New Researches

There has been much discussion in the HIV research community about the ways to find a cure for the disease. While current medical technology has been effective at keeping the virus suppressed temporarily, stopping antiretroviral therapy (ART), for example, just creates the perfect environment for the remaining virus to proliferate. These HIV reservoirs, as they're called, are seen as the last hiding places for HIV in the body, and the key to finding a functional cure lies within them. It seems that a sterilizing cure will remain elusive for the time being, however. Let's discuss four of the approaches being tested to find a functional cure for HIV.

The first is intensifying the treatment on the residual virus within the body-the HIV reservoirs. However, a couple of recent studies showed that there was no discernible benefit for doing so, since there was no noticeable decline in the quantity of residual HIV remaining in the body. Early treatment is another option. In this approach, treatment is started as soon as a person is diagnosed as HIV positive. Several studies have indicated that the number of infected cells is lower when early treatment is initiated rather than further along in the process of chronic infection.

The elimination of infected T cells is one of the most interesting approaches, mainly because it deals with one of the HIV reservoir sources. Latently infected cells are dormant; that is, they're "turned off," and antiretroviral drugs won't be able to detect these cells. In order to eliminate these infected cells, they're treated with drugs designed to turn the cells "on," and make them detectable to antiretroviral drugs. The thought process behind this is to make more cells active, which thereby reduces the number of HIV reservoirs in the body, which subsequently reduces the viral load to a level that the immune system can eventually suppress on its own without the help of ART-in effect, a functional HIV cure.

Zinc finger nucleases are another approach being thought of. Treating uninfected cells with genetic modification to make them resistant to HIV infection is a major step. The idea comes from a very rare anomaly that less than 2% of the world's population has-a genetic defect that makes interferes with the CCR5 receptor, the main point of entry for HIV into the cells. This defect makes it very difficult for HIV to enter cells. Mimicking this genetic defect can make the body resistant to HIV infection in general, which could lay the ground work for finding not only a functional cure, but a vaccine to give to non-infected people as well.

Breast Milk Cures Hiv?

Ask any breastfeeding mama and she’ll likely tell you all about the magic of breast milk. In fact, you may have a tough time getting her to stop touting the benefits. From that first tiny drop providing unmatched newborn nourishment to the unsurpassed, ongoing comfort, and from the soothing of scrapes, sunburns, and mosquito bites, to providing endless hours of fodder for passionate debate and conversation.

Just when you were wondering if there was anything that breast milk couldn’t do, the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine releases an eye-opening study which claims to have uncovered a link between human breast milk and interception of the oral transmission of HIV. As my two year old would say, “tah-dah!”

The study, conducted on genetically-altered mice at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Medical School, suggests that there are compounds found in human breast milk that destroy HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Study leader Dr. Victor Garcia, from the UNC, said, “This study provides significant insight into the amazing ability of breast milk to destroy HIV and prevent its transmission. No child should ever be infected with HIV because it is breastfed.  Breastfeeding provides critical nutrition and protection from other infections, especially where clean water for infant formula is scarce.” Dr. Garcia went on to add that, “understanding how HIV is transmitted to infants and children despite the protective effects of milk will help us close this important door to the spread of AIDS.”

The facts surrounding HIV when it comes to pediatric AIDS cases can be startling, so hold on tight: more than 15 percent of new HIV infections occur among children, some 400,000 in 2010 alone. Left untreated, only 65 percent of HIV infected babies survive until their first birthday, and fewer than 50 percent reach the age of two.

Despite repeated exposure over extended periods of time, most “at-risk” breastfed infants do not end up with HIV.  The tests on mice at UNC show that while some children do acquire HIV from breastfeeding, human breast milk does offer a unique and strong anti-viral effect.

Though it’s true that research conducted on animals does not necessarily equate to the same results in humans, scientists agree with the researchers who performed the UNC study and are optimistic that isolation of specific compounds in human breast milk could lead to new ways of  preventing the spread and transmission of HIV.

Myths of Colloidal Silver

Some of you may well have heard of colloidal silver before, and some may have even worked with it. Others may have heard about it but have no idea what the term actually means and how it works. As it turns out, silver colloids are particularly useful mixtures which are widely used in laboratories all around the world.

The term colloidal silver was coined during the 1990s to describe a mixture containing silver nano particles whose silver content totals over 50% of the mixture. However, where many companies have come unstuck is in labeling their products as colloidal silver, without undergoing the detailed and often costly laboratory process to determine the exact levels of silver in their products. Many companies have advertised silver colloids, when the actual product on the shelves may be nothing of the sort.

So, how can you tell if a product is a true colloid or not?
There are a few telltale signs which show when the silver content of a solution is less than half. If the color of a solution is clear then it is not colloidal silver. In actual fact, true silver colloids in natural light will be amber in colour, as the silver particles suspended in the liquid absorb light at a different wavelength to most liquids. It stands to reason that the darker amber a liquid appears, the higher the concentration of silver nano particles it contains and the purer the mixture will be.

Another sure fire method of recognizing when a solution is not true silver colloid is when it has been labelled by the manufacturers as "mild silver protein" or "silver protein". The difference between these mixtures and true silver colloids are the size of the silver particles (a silver protein can be in the order of 100s of times bigger than a silver nano particle!). Of course there are plenty of other tests which show whether or not your solution is true colloidal silver or not, but as is so often the way with science, such tests are not quite so simple to perform outside of a laboratory.

Unfortunately, the trials do not stop there, as colloidal silver itself doesn't have a one size fits all approach, i.e. not all colloidal silver solutions have the same properties! If only life were so simple; the truth is that there are vast differences in the properties of silver colloids based on the concentration of nanoparticles, making the mixture suitable for use in varying applications. It is for this reason that if you wish to buy silver colloids, it is important you use an experienced producer of colloids that knows exactly how to engineer the perfect solution for your intended purpose.

Why Antiretroviral Therapy Cannot Cure HIV Infection

Today, science, research, and technology have done so much when it comes to addressing the problems of humankind. It has invented so many things making life easier and more convenient. By just visiting a house, you can see a lot of instruments, tools, machines, and equipment that aid in the smooth flow of everyday life. Not only that, inventions and discoveries has helped various aspects of our lives. Health and medicine is one of those that benefited from science and technology. There are now drugs that can cure or prevent diseases such as heart attack, urinary tract infection, lung cancer, and many others. But there is still one pandemic that until now no one has discovered the drug that can cure it: HIV infection.

What is Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV?

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus or HIV is classified as a lentivirus. HIV causes the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or AIDS. It is a condition where the immune system of an individual starts to fail, which leads to opportunistic infections. One may be infected with HIV through the transfer of vaginal fluid, semen, breast milk, pre-ejaculate, or through the blood. HIV is present in these bodily fluids as virus in infected immune cells and as a free virus particle. There are four major ways of transferring the virus and these are through breast milk, use of contaminated needles, transmission from mother to child, and unsafe sex.

Today, there are many researches being done to study the virus and how to reverse or prevent its effect of failing the immune system. Many doctors and researchers are conducting experiments to find a way on how to cure this deadly virus. Currently, there are antiretroviral therapies being used to block HIV replication. But even if these antiretroviral therapies are efficacious the infection still persists. The reason for the persistence of HIV is due to the reservoir cells that are latently infected. This reservoir is stable and is established early. This is the main recognized cause of HIV persistence.

Reservoir of latently HIV-infected cells

The latent reservoir of HIV is best characterized in memory CD4+ T cells. There is also a possibility that the reservoir may exist in other cells such as the hematopoietic stem cells, macrophages, and within the brain microglia. When a patient is treated successfully with an antiretroviral therapy for many years or even a decade, it shows that there is actually no significant reduction in the size particularly of the latent reservoir. On the other hand, when the therapy is discontinued the relapse of viral replication is rapid.

With this kind of virus, there is a need for a life-long antiviral therapy. The problem is this kind of therapy is very prone to cumulative side effects and drug resistance. Another thing is it is a burden financially particularly in those regions where the epidemic is most prevalent.

So, the fact remains that until today there is still no cure against HIV. The promises of antiretroviral therapies apparently do not yield all the positive results expected. So, given the fact that you still need a life-long treatment an HIV infected individual cannot expect a normal life yet. What is needed to really treat the virus is to find a way on how to eradicate the reservoir of latently infected cells. If science and research cannot discover something to address this, then HIV will remain a deadly virus killing thousands and thousands of people around the world.

What is to be done to eradicate HIV?

Today, there is a need for a multidisciplinary and joint effort with the goal of achieving a long term functional cure that is drug free remissions in individuals infected with HIV. The other goal of this effort is to develop a prophylactic vaccine against the virus for those who are not yet infected.

Given the advances in technology today, a long period of investigation will still be necessary to finally discover this cure.

HIV AIDS Symptoms and Diseases

HIV/AIDS is often referred to as a silent epidemic because of its long incubation period. It means the disease may have infected a person for years already without any concrete symptoms. A person who is positive for HIV/AIDS may even infect other persons with this illness if he/she is unaware of his/her own condition.

The infection of HIV can be divided into various phases. However, in most cases, these phases are hard to discern from one another. The health of the infected person is actually dependent on the immune system of the individual which may also dictate the complications that might take place.

These days, HIV/AIDS is considered a chronic disease since an infected person may live for several more years due to the benefits of antiretroviral therapy. While the symptoms of HIV/AIDS are really hard to determine, below are some of the common things that happen to those who are infected by HIV/AIDS:

  • Oral thrush
  • Recurrent herpes infections
  • Fever of unknown origin
  • Persistent cough
  • Diarrhea
  • Weight loss. Those with HIV/AIDS can be observed to lose weight along the way since their immune system has been affected
  • Fatigue. Most HIV/AIDS patients experience fatigue also because of the effects on their immune system
  • Bacterial skin infections
  • Night sweats
  • Patients who are more advanced in the disease experience major problems due to opportunistic infections or cancers, such as:
  • Cerebral toxoplasmosis
  • Pneumocystis pneumonia
  • Cytomegalovirus infection of retina or gut
  • Tuberculosis
  • Disseminated Mycobacterium avium infection
  • Lymphoma
  • Kaposi's sarcoma which is a rare form of skin cancer
  • Dementia

HIV/AIDS can be a very deceiving illness since a patient may remain very healthy for a long time with no symptoms at all although the virus is progressively destroying his immune defenses. This is what makes it hard to diagnose early. There are cases when the patients would be diagnosed when they are almost at the terminal phase making it really difficult to reconstitute, even partially, the immune system. With this, there is an apparent need to raise the awareness of the public about this disease. This disease is such a traitor and may infect other without them knowing it. The information of this disease must be widely spread especially among poor countries where the disease is rampant.

What Are Signs and Symptoms of HIV/AIDS

HIV is a truculent, unnerving virus that weakens and destroys your immune system, leaving a person vulnerable to becoming infected by more deadly diseases such as AIDS. More specifically, it destroys the cells that help one get better when sick and prevent them from getting sick when infact healthy.

What is HIV exactly? HIV is actually an acronym that stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. The first part, "Human" indicates that only us, humans, are susceptible to HIV. The second part, "Immunodeficiency" means that it attacks your immune system, "-Immuno" referring to your immunity system and "-deficiency" meaning lack of, so Immunodeficiency means, "Lack of immunity." The third part "virus" indicates that HIV is a virus, a disease that reproduces by taking over host cells and making them their own.

Knowing what this means, one might think that this virus leads to a quick and painful death, this however, is not the case and HIV is not as presumptuous as it may seem. "HIV can hide for long periods of time in the cells of your body and that it attacks a key part of your immune system - your T-cells or CD4 cells. Your body has to have these cells to fight infections and disease, but HIV invades them, uses them to make more copies of itself, and then destroys them." (http://aids.gov)

HIV itself does not have any symptoms, although, after being infected for about a month or two, one may experience a flu like sickness that can include the following symptoms: Fever, Headache, Tiredness and Enlarged lymph nodes. The early symptoms of HIV can provoke digestive symptoms that also develop nausea and regurgitation, diarrhea, lack of appetite, and obvious weight loss, more severe symptoms are inflammation of the liver and pancreas. But for the most part, after being exposed with HIV one will experience an asymptomatic period, where one will not experience any symptoms.

This period will usually last ten years for adults or about two years for new born babies that had HIV passed down to them. Eventually as the immune system begins to wither one will begin to develop other symptoms, such as "swollen glands(typically the first symptom), followed by lack of energy, weight loss, frequent fevers and sweats, frequent yeast infections, rashes, pelvic inflammatory disease, in women, and short term memory loss".

In conclusion, HIV is a serious virus that leaves one susceptible to other viruses and diseases. It slowly and deceitfully kills off cells that protect the body from harm. It typically has no early symptoms, except for maybe a fever a month or two after being exposed. Then in about ten years you start to develop the first symptoms.

Glutathione Helps People Infected With HIV-AIDS

Human immunodeficiency virus, commonly known as HIV is a retrovirus that leads to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The immune system of a person suffering from HIV /AIDS gradually starts weakening and deteriorating, finally failing to resist diseases.

HIV is present in the form of free virus particles as well as virus in within the infected immune cells of the body fluids. The HIV infection is passed from one person to the other though the direct contact of infected body fluids. However, the main means through which HIV is transferred is through unsafe intercourse with an infected person, contaminated needles, breast milk and from an infected mother to her child.

HIV infection is spreading at a very fast pace infecting more and more number of people with each passing day. According to a latest estimation, about 0.6% of the total population of the world is infected with HIV, of which most of the people belong to Africa.

HIV starts spreading in the body, by mainly infecting the vital cells of the human immune system. The number of cells start declining and the body starts to loose its immunity due to which the body starts to become more prone to the different infections and diseases.

If the needed treatment is not available, then most of the people infected with HIV, develops AIDS in the long run which comes to an end along with death. Treatment with antiretroviral helps in increasing the life expectancy of people infected with HIV.

At present there is no complete cure or vaccine known for HIV (AIDS). The only protection from HIV is avoiding getting infected by the virus. However, antiretroviral treatment is believed to reduce the risk of the infection being spread if the treatment is started soon after exposure to the infection. Studies have shown that it is easier to control and treat children infected with HIV compared to adults.

Glutathione is an essential tripeptide present in our bodies. It is the body's own master antioxidant, detoxifier and immune booster.

Studies and researches conducted for many years have suggested that, with an increased level of glutathione in the body, HIV infected patients can improve their survival with the help of glutathione.

If the HIV infected patients have sufficient level of glutathione in the body, the body's master antioxidant, detoxifier and immune booster can prove to be beneficial for HIV patients to a great extent.

Studies and researches have shown that patients infected with HIV were having lower levels of glutathione in the body or were suffering from glutathione deficiency. Also due to depletion of glutathione in the body, the progression of the HIV infection in the body was faster which reduced the survival period of the infected persons.

Therefore, if a person infected with HIV maintains and improves the glutathione level in the body, it will prove to be of great help for him/her as the progression pace of the infection will be reduced and the survival period will also be improved.

Dr. Robert Keller, the formulator of MaxGXL, created it specifically to treat the patients in his clinic in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Keller's patients are typically immuno-affected with AIDS, Hepatitis C or Cancer.

Dr. Keller has created a non toxic, inexpensive HIV/AIDS treatment that was designed specifically to addresses the huge HIV/AIDS crisis that exists in Africa and other 3rd world locations.

Overview & Facts About HIV/AIDS Disease

HIV is simply the virus that causes AIDS while AIDS is the viral disease caused by HIV. HIV means Human Immunodeficiency Virus while AIDS means Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. The virus that causes AIDS is a special one because it is not just a virus but a retro-virus that replicates in a fraction of seconds and attacks the human immune system severely. The immune system contains biological "soldiers" known as antibodies that fight against diseases. The weakening of the immune system makes the human body vulnerable to opportunistic infections including tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. I suppose you know what I have just said about HIV/AIDS.

HIV/AIDS is transmitted through the exchange of blood directly or indirectly from an infected person to another person. The use of unsterilized sharp instruments such as a needle, razor, injection syringe, and hair clipper can cause the transmission of HIV/AIDS. Unprotected sexual intercourse can cause the transmission of HIV/AIDS. A mother living with HIV/AIDS can transmit to her unborn child through the umbilical cord which connects the mother and the unborn child. Blood transfusion can also lead to transmission of HIV/AIDS if the transfused blood is infected with HIV/AIDS. So there are only four known ways through which you can contact the virus that causes AIDS. There's no way you can contact HIV through mosquito bites, having a hand shake with someone that is infected, hugging, kissing, and sharing personal effects such as towel and clothes with someone that is living with the virus.

The only way you can find out whether you have contacted the virus is through having a blood test. And you have to go for the blood test from time to time, at least twice in a year, because the virus has an incubation period of about 3-6 months. If you are not yet married abstinence from sexual intercourse is the best option for you but if you cannot abstain you have to protect yourself with condom. Then if you are married you just have to be faithful to your partner - stick to him or her because he or she has got whatever you are looking for out there. You have to make sure that you avoid unprotected sexual intercourse, and other ways of getting infected with the disease. I also think that you know these things I have just said about HIV/AIDS.

But there is one thing you don't know about HIV/AIDS. What you don't know is that HIV/AIDS kills slower than the stigma attached to it by some people in our various societies. Yes you heard me well. Stigmatization has killed more people living with HIV/AIDS than the virus or the disease itself. Some people living with HIV/AIDS have been rejected by their families and friends simply because they tested positive to the virus. Some people living with the virus have lost their jobs simply because they are living with the virus. I can go and on to tell you what some people have been passing through because of the fact that they are living with HIV/AIDS. Some of them have committed suicide because they thought they could not live to face the stigma. More and more people living with HIV/AIDS have died as a result of stigmatization or the psychological trauma that follows the disease.

You have to show love to these people living with HIV/AIDS. You have to show that their families and friends still want them. You have to show them that the society still wants them irrespective of the fact that they are living with HIV/AIDS. You have to let these people know that they are not less human because of their medical condition. You have to let them know that living with HIV/AIDS is not the end of the world. Let them know that they can still live a normal life though they are living with HIV/AIDS. As a matter of fact, anybody can live with the virus so you have no right to stigmatize anybody because of HIV/AIDS.

How Liquorices Can Cure HIV/AIDS Symptoms ?

In recent years there have been many claims of finding a cure for HIV/AIDS. All these claims are nothing but cruel jokes played on those suffering from the disease.

As it is, a person suffering from HIV not only has to undergo extreme physical trauma, but will also have to bear with immense mental trauma. It is a commonly known fact that, HIV does not strike immediately, but lies dormant in your body for a considerably long time. During this period, it continuously weakens your immune system. Once your immune system is weak, it strikes in the form of AIDS, giving the victim absolutely no chances of survival.

Although, a number of antiretroviral drugs have been developed in recent times, which can delay the arrival of AIDS, we still do not have any cure for HIV/AIDS. Along with these retroviral drugs, studies have also suggested the presence of many natural components, which can be very effective in the treatment of HIV. One such component is Liquorices or licorice, as it is most commonly known as.

As in case of retroviral drugs, so is it in this case; licorice can not cure HIV/AIDS, but studies have suggested, that it can be quite effective in delaying the growth of HIV into full fledged AIDS. Due to this reason, a number of tests have been conducted on licorice, to see to it, whether, it can be effective in finding a cure for HIV.

Although licorice has been used for medicinal purposes for a fairly long time, especially in the Mediterranean countries, recent studies have revealed some startling facts about it.

According to recent studies, it was found that, glycyrrhizin acid or GA as it is more popularly known as, can be quite effective in destructing cells which are latently infected with Kaposi sarcoma–associated herpes virus.

Now Kaposi sarcoma–associated herpes virus, or KHSV, is a virus, which is characteristic feature in cases of HIV/AIDS; and it supposedly helps the Human Immunodeficiency Virus to survive in latent stage. Therefore, it is suggested by many people that, licorice may ultimately emerge as a great tool for finding a cure for HIV.

Till that happens, you can still use licorice in limited quantities to delay the arrival of AIDs. In fact many scientists have even suggested that, Licorice has the capability to help in fighting the virus, if taken orally or even if injected in the blood stream. You can take 2 gm of licorice root tablets initially.

Although licorice may have many medicinal properties, it should be taken in limited quantities. This is because; excess intake of licorice may cause high blood pressure. It is therefore advisable to consult with your physician before you go for licorice.

Vitamins- Vital Part of HIV Nutrition and Supplements

HIV is a virus that weakens our immune system. It therefore, becomes very important for a person suffering with HIV to keep his immune system in good shape, in order to delay the arrival of AIDS.

Since the primary aim should be to keep your immune system in good shape, therefore, proper nourishment plays a very vital role in this regard. As it is, Vitamins can play a very pivotal role in delaying the onset of AIDS, thereby improving the lifespan of the patient.

Proper intake of vitamins would not only help an HIV positive person to strengthen his immune system, but would also help in coping up with strong medication which is a common feature of antiretroviral drugs.

Vitamin nutrients like Vitamin A, B1, B6, B12, C and E have been found to be very efficient in strengthening the immune system of the human body. This is very important for an HIV positive person because a strong immune system can downplay the development of HIV and further resist the arrival of AIDS.

Vitamin C is by far one of the most essential vitamins as far as strengthening the immune system is concerned. You can get a good supply of Vitamin C, by including lots of citrus fruits like lemon and tomatoes in your diet chart. Apart from that, most citrus fruits like lemon also have antioxidant properties, which help in prevention of cancer and are also effective in flushing out toxins which cause damage to the cells and the tissues of the body.

Vitamin B12 is another vital nutrient for an HIV positive person. Studies have shown that proper intake of Vitamin B12 can help in fighting problems like deficiency could lead to anemia, depression, neuropathy, rashes, and fatigue, along with serious problems like lymphocytes. Products like beef and chicken are rich in vitamin B12.

Along with these, proper dosage of Vitamin A can help in enhancing the production of helpful body chemicals that fights off the ill effects of HIV. As it is, Beta-carotene can be very effective for an HIV positive person in delaying the arrival of AIDS. Products like eggs, fish and milk are good sources of vitamin A.

Along with these, vitamin B1 and B6 can also prove to be very good for you in warding off the ill effects of HIV.

HIV being such a deadly virus, with no cure till date, the only thing that an HIV positive person can do to increase his/her lifespan is to improve upon the immune system of the body. As it is, vitamins can play a major role in this. However, excess of vitamin intake can cause damage too. It is therefore better to consult your doctor, who would prescribe you with the right dosage of vitamin intake.

Potential of Genetically Modified Soy to Manage HIV/AIDS in Africa

Genetically modified foods have been a part of our diet, for a very long time. An entire generation of kids has been brought up on genetically modified foods, mainly genetically modified soy.

While the fight continues between the Agro firms and the anti-biotech brigade on the production of genetically modified foods, average people like me are left to wonder; whom to trust. While agro firms would tell you that GM foods are alright for consumption, the anti-biotech brigade would come up with a different version, telling you about the harmful effects of consuming genetically modified stuffs.

Anyhow, genetically modified stuffs are here to stay and we can love them, or we can hate them, but we can not simply ignore them. The latest addition to the long list genetically modified foods, is GM soy for HIV/AIDS patients.

The company, in news is Solae, which is a US-based soy ingredient company. With its announcement, to commission a study to find out whether soy products can be used to improve the health of HIV/AIDS sufferers in South Africa, it has once again brought the issue of GM food consumption in the forefront.

As it aims to make soy protein-enhanced drinks for HIV/AIDS sufferers in Africa; in collaboration with the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa; the debate gets hotter and hotter. While around ninety percent of soy produced in the U.S. is genetically modified, South Africa, on the other hand, is steadily becoming a hub of genetically modified crops. In fact, according to a recent study the bulk of soy currently being grown in South Africa is genetically engineered.

We already see signs of a battle brewing up between both the lobbies, with the anti-biotech brigade claiming that this is just another conspiracy between the biotech industry and the academia to exploit the vulnerability of HIV/AIDS sufferers in Africa to market genetically modified products. However, Solae has agreed to let the findings of this study peer-reviewed and published in a respectable scientific journal.

Now, if the GM soy actually works, then it can work wonders for millions of people all across the globe, who are suffering from HIV/AIDS; and at the same time, are not able to afford the antiretroviral drug therapy. Africa, as it might be known to you, is perhaps the worst affected region, as far as the HIV/AIDS catastrophe is concerned. GM soy can prove to be a boon for them, provided, it actually works the same way as claimed.

Whether GM soy can actually help people suffering from HIV/AIDS, would be figured out in future. Till then we need to keep our fingers crossed and hope that the turnout comes up with a positive result.

Sculptra - For People Who Want to Reverse the Ravages of HIV

An HIV infection can change your life for ever. Not only do you have to deal with the stigma of getting infected with HIV, you would also be required to be prepared to look frail and sick. You may even have to face some discrimination at the work place.

As it is, HIV can make your life a complete hell. However, with recent medical developments, the lifespan of people living with HIV has increased considerably. With a number of antiretroviral drugs having entered the market, the average HIV infected guy can hope to live a longer life.

Now, since HIV is such a deadly disease, therefore, you need to go through really strong medication, in order to keep AIDS at bay. However, these strong medications take a toll on your health, along with your physical appearance as well. As a result people begin to look frail and weak, with maximum damage been done to the skin, which tends to turn loose.

Of late, there have been a number of health treatments, which caters to the needs of the HIV patients. One such treatment is Sculptra. It is a sort of inject able filler, which rebuilds the skin from inside. It does so, by stimulating the collagen of the body to add more volume to the skin.

This gives you a tighter and firmer skin, which has more elasticity. And if you do have doubts about Sculptra, then in that case, you would be glad to know that, Sculptra has recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration department, for the cosmetic treatment of the skin for people living with HIV.

Sculptra is a skin filler made of Poly-L-lactic acid and is injected under the skin. The result is a fairly good looking skin which a person living with HIV can never imagine. The effect usually last for two years.

Some of the major advantages of Sculptra are as follows:

1. It helps a person living with HIV to lead a healthy life, by looking healthy. As it is, Sculptra would not make you feel healthy, but would definitely give you that fuller look. So, people do not actually know that you have HIV, unless and until you tell them about it.

HIV/AIDS -Related Stigma and Discrimination

A major cause of the rise in the number of HIV positive cases has been the stigma attached with it. Although a lot many facts have been revealed about HIV/AIDS, it is still considered a taboo. Due to this reason, people with HIV infection often have to face a number of discrimination both at work place, as well as the personal front.

Many of you might have watched the movie Philadelphia. Tom Hanks as the victim and Denzel Washington as the attorney fighting for his rights made it one of my favorite movies till date. It is one of the very few movies, which dared to touch a very sensitive topic, i.e. discrimination with HIV infected people.

But before we can actually move in the direction of eradicating discrimination on the basis of HIV infection, it would be better to understand the main reason why, such a kind of discrimination actually takes place.

The following are some of the main reasons, why HIV is considered to be such a stigma:

1. The first and foremost cause is that, HIV/AIDS is an incurable as well as life threatening disease. Due to this reason, HIV/AIDS is one of the most dreaded diseases. Most people do not wish to get in touch with an HIV infected person, simply because they do not want to get infected themselves.

2. Another reason for seeing HIV as a stigma is the fact, that, it is associated with a few activities like drug addiction and prostitution. These activities are generally considered immoral and so is it thought about the people who have been infected with this disease. Apart from that, HIV is also associated with homosexuality, which is also considered a taboo in many cultures.

3. Apart from this, a number of rumors associated with it, make HIV a highly stigmatized disease. In fact, rumors about HIV are a great problem, which have been instrumental in making it a stigma, as well as helping it spread across to a large number of vulnerable people all across the globe.

It needs to be understood here, that stigmatizing the disease, would not actually solve the problem. In fact, it further adds to the problem, by helping HIV/AIDS spread further.

A large number of people stay away from getting them tested for HIV infection, mainly due to the stigma associated with it. Many of these people are actually infected with HIV. Timely testing would not only help them improve their lifespan, but would also stop them from spreading the infection further.

Colloidal Silver and HIV Infection

With science developing by leaps and bounds, we have done great for us, by coming up with a number of products. However, when it comes to HIV, we still do not have much significant stuff in our hand. As it is, we still do not even have a cure for HIV; leave alone a cure for AIDS.

We are still left with prevention as the only hope and only option to deal with HIV/AIDS. However, there has been rapid advancement in this regard. With the development of the antiretroviral drug therapy and the rapid advancement in this field, we are still left with some hope.

Apart from focusing solely on the antiretroviral drug therapy a number of alternate medicinal courses have also come up, giving an HIV infected person a lot of hope. Many of these medicines focus on the natural way of dealing with the disease. Colloidal silver is an important addition to the list of alternate medicines.

Colloidal silver is a liquid solution consisting of microscopic silver particles, which are electrically charged in distilled water. As it is, colloidal silver has not reportedly resulted in any side effects, mainly due to the fact, that, it does not have any harmful chemicals. Moreover, it is generally prepared through non-chemical method. Due to this reason, Colloidal silver is becoming increasingly popular.

Colloidal silver has been found to be quite effective in enhancing the immune system of the body. They have also been found to have anti viral and antibacterial properties. As it is, silver is known to be, highly toxic to most microbial cells and has long been used as an antimicrobial agent, for the treatment of a number of diseases.

Silver and its various compounds, such as silver sulfadiazine, have been used in many medicines as antimicrobial agents. Researches state, that colloidal silver acts as antimicrobial agent mainly through three ways. Firstly, it attaches itself to the virus and absorbs the surrounding oxygen, as a result of which, the microbe is unable to breathe and dies quickly. Secondly it hinders the enzyme production capacity of the microbe, which is very essential for its survival. Thirdly, it also acts as an inhibitor in the duplication process, which stops the microbe from spreading further.

Due to these properties, colloidal silver is being increasingly hailed as one of our best bets as far as treatment for HIV infection is concerned. Colloidal silver can be used in a number of ways. It can be taken both orally, as well as by way of intravenous injections. However, it is required to be taken in regulated dose and hence you should consult your physician before you start with colloidal silver.

Important Facts on HIV/AIDS Orphans

In the last few years, HIV/AIDS has killed millions of people. A direct result of this catastrophe has been the dramatically high number of children, who have lost one or both their parents to AIDS. According to a rough estimate, there are more than fifteen million children who have lost their parents to AIDS.

As HIV is staring at us with a satanic smile, it is really pathetic to find ourselves in such helpless situation, where, we are left with no other alternative, than to save the unaffected people from getting infected. As it is, HIV does not have any cure till date, and more so, a cure is not even visible in near future, makes the future extremely gloomy.

Children are the worst affected in such cases. Apart from bearing with the extreme trauma of watching their parents die a terrible death; the afterlife is full of challenges. With virtually no help from the society as such, children having lost both the parents are there on the streets, at the mercy of others, which is indeed hard to find in today’s date.

Society is extremely harsh on these children who often carry the virus themselves; and even when they do not, they are always suspected of carrying the virus. As a result, they have to face a lot of discrimination from the surrounding environment. Little souls crushed under the weight of their parents deaths due to AIDS; they often end up as easy targets of human trafficking.

It is estimated, that there would be more than fifty million orphaned children in Africa alone, by the year 2010. You do not have to be a Sherlock Holmes, to adjudge the fate of these children and what kind of treatment is going to be meted out to them.

No wonder that a majority of these children are not going to die a premature death. More so, with both their parents dead; these children are left totally dependent on grants and charity for their HIV treatment. Since grants and charities are hard to come by, most of theses children get no treatment as such.

With the current global count being close to Fifteen million, in regard to children with both parents lost to AIDS, the condition is pretty bleak. The seriousness of this condition can be judged from the fact that, in 1990 the proportion of children who lost parents due to AIDS was just under 2%, whereas this level rose dramatically to reach more than 28% in 2003.

Another disadvantage, which these children face, is the lack of availability of medication suitable for young children. Despite all the retroviral drug therapy that we have, we still do not have enough medication options which are suitable for children. As it is, the antiretroviral drugs are pretty hard and can not be administered to children.

Children are the worst affected lot, as far as the HIV/AIDS epidemic is concerned. We ourselves are to be blamed for this; which means, that it is our responsibility to do something in this regard.
